Ollie makes it through to ISA World Champs

Nicaragua here we come!

Saturday’s race at Kingsbridge, South Devon was one of the biggest races for me this season.

To finish off a long season the British Stand Paddle Board Association had a distance race to gain selection for the British team to compete at next years ISA World Stand Up Paddle Championships.

The World Championships in Peru this year was one of the highlights of the year for me so I was really hoping to make the team again.

At the start of the race everyone went off at a fast pace to get into a good position for the first tight buoy turn. At the buoy I was third but as Pete the Irish Lad had a slow turn this gave Sonny the chance to get a gap on the field.  Going down the river with the wind I got my head down and paddled hard to close the gap to get back with Sonny and in doing so dropped the chasing pack.

Sitting on Sonny’s wash up to about half way I really wanted to lead the second half and try and get away so as a tight buoy turn was coming up I paddled hard to get onto the inside of the turn and get into the lead.

Leading going back up the river was hard as we were against the wind and current and sitting in behind someone would have been the better option but I kept the pace high and got a small gap and went onto win.

I’m very happy with the result as after finishing joint 5th in last weeks British Sup Surfing Champs I came down with a heavy cold.

Watching Ben Skinner in the ISA World Long board Champs a few weeks back and seeing that the Brits can compete on world level hopefully Team GB can do well in Nicaragua.
