The Surfing Tribe

Team Riders Alan Stokes and Sam Bleakley were in Newquay this past Friday (5th) to celebrate the launch of The Surfing Tribe, a book written by Roger Mansfield celebrating 50 years of surfing in Britain.

Kicking off the festivities, modern-day surf champions Sam Bleakley from Sennen and Newquay’s Alan Stokes compared the surfing equipment and styles of the past with modern equipment. Sam, who donned a vintage 60s wetsuit and paddled out on a classic board, said “You have to admire the surfers back in the 60s, they obviously didn’t have internet surf forecasting, and they would paddle out, even at a big-wave spot like The Cribbar, without leashes, and just wearing shorts and t-shirts.” Alan Stokes was amazed at the difference between the old wetsuit and his own super-flexible modern one: “We’ve come a long way in 50 years,” said Alan. “Surfing would never have been as popular as it is if we were still using those stiff wetsuits.”

Here is a shot of the guys comparing the equipment with Roger:
