Performance Tips – Carve

Posted on August 3, 2009 - Filed Under Shortboarding, Surftech Boards | By

Hi guys

The latest issue of Carve has a feature on performance tips with me, and thought I’d share some with you:

I just surf all the time, so that’s always keeping me fit. I’ve also been doing quite a bit of mountain biking, and then running and swimming if its flat. I don’t really have a swimming routine, I’ll just jump in and swim until I’m knackered. I bodysurf a lot too.
Recently I’ve been trying to concentrate on building leg strength ‘cos my legs are like chicken legs! But apart from that I’m not full on.I just love going surfing all the time. I’ll surf every day whatever the conditions, and if it’s good Ill go in twice a day.I don’t have short surfs either, I’ll surf until I’m broken, or feel like I’m surfing well for the conditions. There’s probably loads of stuff I could do. I mean if I look at the Top 45, there’s a lot more training I could do.

It’s good to try and take apart your surfing and put it back together, work on your weaknesses as well as your strengths. Watch how other surfers pull off manoeuvres, how they did it and why they looked good… Kids get filmed a lot these days because video cameras are readily available. It’s really good. It’s a wake up call sometimes. Even now when I see myself surf I’m like, ‘oh no!’

One thing that really helps is to know your equipment and what works in what waves. It’s a massive part of performance. It’s really difficult to get your equipment right, because things are always changing, but it gives you a huge boost. If you find a magic board then you’ll have more fun and want to get in the sea more. Your fitness and wave knowledge will increase and in the end you’ll be a better surfer.
