Becker

Phil Becker began his shaping career in 1958. The numbers since then are staggering. Phil has hand shaped over 120,000 boards to date-easily twice as many as any other shaper in the world. All of those boards have been shaped in the original shaping room he started almost 50 years ago, in Hermosa Beach California.

You could literally chronicle the history of the foam surfboard from start to current through his work. He is an amazing craftsman whose both Versatile and accurate. Phil was one of the pioneer shapers to reintroduce longboards to the scene in the '80s, and he is considered an important influence in the evolution of the mid size fun board.

Some interesting Phil facts: We did some rough calculations and figure that during his long career moving back and forth from nose to tail, Phil has walked to New York and back 31/2 times. Phil has never worn a watch, or owned a TV. He has never purchased a new car. As you can see in the picture, he is noticeably taller than his hair, and has been since his early '20s.

Unlike many surf personalities, Phil has chosen a professional career out of the limelight. He has always shied away from cameras and interviews.

Phil has kept a North Shore Hawaii getaway house since the mid '70s, and now splits his time between that house and his beach house on an unnameable secluded break in Southern Costa Rica.

Board Review
With short board trends heading thinner and narrower, the performance/paddle section of the market requires a board like the hybrid.
The hybrid is a shortboard for those who demand paddling punch.

Board Review
The template has a continuous curve throughout its length allowing for a smooth and fluid rail to rail transition. The width in the surfboard will allow you to foot work the length and also help increase your wave count in those crowded conditions.
From beach breaks to the reefs, this board’s versatility will make it the most used surfboard in your quiver.

Board Review
The Supermodel is the first Becker surfboard designed specifically for girls. Spending months talking to the softer side of the sport, asking them what they were looking for in a surfboard. Comfort in carrying the board was very important, as well as it being manoeuvrable and forgiving. As a result, Becker gave the new model a tad more rocker, made it a bit narrower and softened the rails. Pulling the wide point back a tad to properly disperse the weight and to top it off, incorporating a full but not rounded nose.

Board Review
Mike Gee keeps Phil Becker tuned to the pro circuit. In turn Phil keeps Mike in cutting edge equipment.
Mike demands smooth, quick rail to rail as well as full nose riding performance. Concave and rocker enhancements make this board extremely loose rail to rail and the fuller nose makes riding the tip a breeze. The nose is thinner, which also keeps this pup loose rail to rail.

Board Review
The UFO is another longboard classic, offering great paddling with fantastic nose riding capabilities. Phil Becker uses exactly the same template that built the famous "Rick" UFO model he shaped in the mid-sixties. But of course, the rails, rockers, and contours are all modern. This would be Becker's widest contemporary longboard shape with just a tad of nose concave for smooth rail to rail transition, and a little more lift for noseriding without slowing down the drive.
